Know Your Hair Type: The Products That Actually Work
Buying hair products blind wastes money. Learn your hair type and texture, and match the right formulas to it.
Most people buy hair products based on packaging and hope. But the right shampoo for fine, oily hair is the wrong one for thick, curly hair. Identify your type first, and every future purchase gets smarter.
Two things define your hair
Texture is the width of each strand (fine, medium, coarse). Pattern is the shape (straight, wavy, curly, coily). A fine wavy head and a coarse coily head need almost opposite products, even if they're the same 'length.'
Match products to type
- Fine/oily: lightweight, volumizing, silicone-light formulas; wash more often
- Thick/dry: rich, moisturizing creams and oils; wash less often
- Curly/coily: sulfate-free cleansers, heavy leave-ins, and gels to define
- Color-treated: color-safe, gentle formulas with UV and heat protection
Less is often more
Overwashing strips natural oils and triggers more oil production; over-conditioning weighs hair down. Start with the minimum, then adjust. If your ends are dry but roots are greasy, condition only mid-length to ends.
How often should I wash my hair?
Fine or oily hair may need washing every 1–2 days; thick, curly, or coily hair often thrives on once or twice a week. Adjust based on how your scalp actually behaves.
Do I really need heat protectant?
Yes — any time you use a dryer, straightener, or curling iron. It's the cheapest insurance against long-term heat damage.
